At Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa, we look forward to November 1st every year — the official start to kitesurfing season. During the winter and spring months, guests fly through the air holding on to their kites, jumping and flipping as their boards leave the water.
People travel from all over the world to try kitesurfing in Saint Lucia because it’s one of the best spots in the world for this sport. Here’s why our island is unique and how you can get out on the water when you stay at Coconut Bay.
Saint Lucia is Known for Its Wind Sports
What makes Saint Lucia the best place for wind sports? Because its average winter wind speed is 18 to 20 knots! While wind speeds drop to a mild 14 to 16 knots during the off season, the breeze picks up in November and lets kitesurfers really soar.
The unique winds at Coconut Bay come from its location on the Atlantic coast of the island. Unlike other Caribbean islands, we get more surf from the Atlantic, without getting overpowered by the full weight of the ocean. This makes more opportunities for surfing and sailing on our side of the island along with other wind sports.
Guests of All Ages Can Try Kitesurfing
You don’t have to be a competitive kitesurfer to appreciate the winds and surf of Saint Lucia. Plenty of our guests are first-time kiteboarders getting their sea legs. At Coconut Bay, we offer lessons for kitesurfers of all levels: beginner, intermediate, and pro. Our staff will evaluate your confidence on the water and direct you to the class level that’s right for your needs.
After about 9 hours of lessons on the board and direction from our staff, you can receive an International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO) certification card proving your knowledge of kitesurfing. This allows you to rent kitesurfing equipment and hit the water in other kiteboarding destinations. These lessons are available to guests over the age of 16.
Perfect Waves Are Only A Few Minutes from the Airport
Coconut Bay is only a five-minute drive from the airport, which means you can get off the plane, grab your gear, and hit the beach less than an hour after you arrive. Before you know it, your toes will be in the sand and your arms will be ready to harness the power of the wind as you fly across the waves and turn tricks on our one mile of beach.
Make sure you book your stay at Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa when the winds are blowing and the conditions are ideal. We’ll see you out on the water!
