The last Sunday in October is near and dear to the hearts of many Saint Lucian residents: it’s Jounen Kwéyòl! Otherwise known as Creole Day, this holiday celebrates the French/African dialect known as Kwéyòl that is widely spoken across the island. All across Saint Lucia, people reflect on the culture and the importance of preserving the island’s heritage through music, dancing, and of course food.
You can join us in these celebrations! At Coconut Bay, we have events all day during Jounen Kwéyòl where you can learn more about our local culture and get a feel and taste for what makes Saint Lucia special.
Eat Like a Local With Breadfruit and Crayfish
Jounen Kwéyòl is about Saint Lucia tradition, which means you will be hard-pressed to find food brought by European colonists during this celebration. While the residents of Saint Lucia cook with rice, flour, and pasta year round, they set those ingredients aside one day a year to embrace island cooking.
Enjoy local crayfish and other dishes prepared by our top-notch chefs that come from the sea and use other island resources. Pair your meal with yams, green bananas, breadfruit, and other tropical treats. Your plate might look a little different from what you eat at home, but you’re sure to lick your fingers and devour each delicious morsel!
Learn How to Dance the Quadrille and Other Steps
One of the most popular Jounen Kwéyòl events in Saint Lucia is our dance classes. Make sure you arrive early to get a good spot and follow our instructors as they help you learn the moves. Sway in the breeze as you learn a variety of folk steps that have deep roots in Saint Lucian history.
Then learn the Quadrille, the National Dance of Saint Lucia, and one of our favorite celebratory dances that can be found at most holiday celebrations. So you will be moving like a local!
Explore Our Culture Through a Variety of Events
Coconut Bay Resort and Spa has a packed schedule on Jounen Kwéyòl! We have events all across the resort for guests of all ages. Learn about our traditional dress or try your hand at playing Creole music. Kids can hear local folklore tales that are passed on through the generations of Saint Lucia.
By the end of the day, you will have a complete feel for the island and its culture, as you connect with our staff in celebration of one of our favorite holidays.
We can’t wait to see you at Jounen Kwéyòl at Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa! The residents of Saint Lucia are sure to make you feel welcome as you celebrate our culture and feel the unique energy that brings life to our island.
