On February 22nd Saint Lucia will celebrate the 37th anniversary of its independence. The island was once an associated state of the U.K, but achieved full independence in 1979. Every year, Saint Lucia celebrates its independence with a fun-filled street parade. One of the biggest parties of the year, Independence Day is a celebration, not just of the island’s emancipation, but also all things Caribbean.
Week-Long Festivities
Usually, Saint Lucia starts celebrating Independence Day about a week before the 22nd. In past years, the island has sponsored events like a tennis tournament, bike festival, concerts, culture exhibitions, and a culinary extravaganza. On Independence Day itself, Saint Lucia typically does a ceremony at a stadium in Castries as well as the street parade. The family-friendly parade usually includes a marching band, soldiers, and lots of blue, yellow, white, and black. In fact, if you attend, be sure to dress in the island’s colors to show your support!
A Caribbean Celebration
Saint Lucia takes great pride in its culture and traditions, including its food, music, and unbeatable street parties, complete with street dancing. This year’s Independence Day bash will begin with live Caribbean music — all original melodies. Followed by a delicious feast of tropical local dishes. After dinner, you’ll see dazzling performances from dancers, acrobats, and fire-breathers. And the fun doesn’t stop there. You can close the evening by dancing with other guests to Caribbean tunes under Saint Lucia’s beautiful starry night sky.
