OUR AWARD-WINNING STAFF

Since our resort first began operations we have been guided by the philosophy that high employee morale generates a healthy work environment which brings positive energy and advanced productivity for exceptional guest experiences. With that in mind our Corporate social responsibility focuses significant initiatives on our staff: contributing to their education, health, enrichment and overall well-being.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY OUR STAFF

From our beginning in 2005 we have provided advancement and educational opportunities as well as financial assistance for staff members and their families through scholarships, tuition reimbursement, bereavement support and monetary aid during unforeseen hardships including medical expenses –all overseen by our resort managers whose collective goal is to enhance the wellbeing of our staff, our most valuable asset.

Awards and Recognition

Coconut Bay celebrates our team with multiple recognition programs throughout the year: Employee of the Month, Leaders Luncheon and Manager of the Quarter. We also plan a themed Annual Staff Awards party to celebrate the top departments, staff and managers each year. Staff members receive award bonuses and recognition including their photo on the Lobby Wall of Fame plaque and features on our corporate social media. Employees are also rewarded for participating in Cross Training Programs and are provided with incentives when they receive guest recognition through our guest review tools.

Employee Health & Wellness

To promote health and wellness among our workforce, Coconut Bay provides an employee Group Health and Life Medical Policy and has arranged Health Fairs on property for staff and their families where health practitioners including doctors, counsellors, dentists, and nutritionists were invited to conduct screenings and examinations on resort in a convenient and confidential setting.

Training and Development

All Coconut Bay personnel receive ongoing training in customer service, professionalism, and communication in addition to their specific areas of expertise. Employees also gain skills in other departments as part of
Coconut Bay’s Cross Training Program. Based on ongoing performance evaluations, we assess training needs and deliver continuous in-house training by our experienced management team as well as outsourced certified trainers.

We are proactive in retaining staff members and are proud that 75% of our leaders (managers, supervisors, and shift leaders) were initially hired as line staff. To be appointed to a supervisory role, Coconut Bay requires employees to undergo supervisory training and become certified with an accredited institution such as the University of the West Indies (UWI), National Research and Development Foundation (NRDF), American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI). AHLEI also allows employees to pursue courses asynchronously to be certified in their area of expertise, for example Certified Restaurant Server and Certified Guest Service Professional.

Over the years, Coconut Bay has funded training for our engineering workers to pursue courses in HVAC with SALCC, skills that also fills a need in the island’s south and the resort has previously served as the training ground for the Vieux Fort Technical School providing our physical assets as an opportunity for hands-on training.

Team Building

A range of events and programs are in place to retain and motivate staff, from career advancement opportunities to incentives and rewards, ensuring our team members are highly engaged and motivated throughout the year. Collaboration and teambuilding is promoted by assigning staff to inhouse teams for monthly sporting activities. Team building activities are also frequently included in resort training exercises for all departments.

Scholarships

To encourage continued staff enrichment, we offer interest-free loans for educational advancement along with a Tuition Reimbursement Program. Coconut Bay also partners with the University of the West Indies Open Campus and National Research and Development Foundation to provide certified courses including Effective Supervisory Skills Training, Project Management and Supervisory Management. We also support online learning through the Typsy Hospitality Training School at no cost.

In addition to providing educational opportunities for our team Coconut Bay provides annual Scholarships to staff children who excel at the Common Entrance Exams, as well as annual school supplies for staff members’ school-age children. To date over EC$1,600,000 in scholarships has been distributed (including our annual Common Entrance Scholarship Awards) to staff members to support their children’s education.

Interest-Free Loans and Tuition Reimbursement

In the event of financial hardship, Coconut Bay provides employees with the option of interest-free loans and reimbursement of 50% of the cost for successful completion of courses to pursue career advancement in higher education. Interest-free loans are available to team members for medical purposes as well as compassionate leave or financial aid should the need arise.

Family Fun Day and School Supplies Distribution

This employee celebration is a fun-filled day scheduled at the end of the summer break before our staff members’ children return to school. In addition to relaxing and visiting with other team members in a festive environment, Coconut Bay provides staff members school age children with donations of school supplies each year.

OUR COMMUNITY

Orchestrating owner Gary ‘Butch’ Hendrickson’s vision, Coconut Bay is committed to being a proactive and responsible corporate citizen setting the standards for area involvement with participation from our staff, stakeholders, and our international guests. For 18 years we have strived with our philanthropic efforts to be socially conscious, taking significant steps to empower and improve the quality of life for the young, elderly and the less fortunate, benefitting not only our Vieux Fort neighbors but many other villages in southern Saint Lucia. Considering our environmental, financial, and social impact, the continuing mission of all endeavors and contributions is not only to support the welfare of our team members but also to reduce our footprint and make a difference in the lives of residents in surrounding communities.

Southern Flying Fish Swimming Club

Coconut Bay is a proud supporter of the Southern Flying Fish Swimming Club. Since 2006, we have allowed this group weekly swim practice time in one of our resort pools. Helping this organization teach this life essential life skill to toddlers and school age children allows them to promote the sport to members of our community. Over the years members from the club have gone on to become Saint Lucia’s elite competitive swimmers from the south.

CocoLand Cares

Coconut Bay’s support for education represents a core philosophical outlook from our owner, who believes in the critical role of educational tools to assist preschoolers in their future growth and learning potential. With that core value in mind, in 2014 the resort’s CocoLand Cares initiative was launched. Through this outreach program early learning educational supplies were carefully chosen to support literacy, language development and math skills. Items were shipped to the resort, sorted and packaged with love, then distributed personally by resort staff to area preschools. After contributing to as many as 148 schools across Saint Lucia over four years, the program was placed on hiatus and relaunched in December 2022 after the removal of pandemic protocols. Coconut Bay’s team was thrilled to be able to resume donations with a focus on preschools in areas surrounding our resorts including both government run and private day cares, pre-schools and special needs schools in areas around Vieux Fort including the Rainbow Children’s Home and the Special Education Center.

St. Jude Hospital Pediatric Ward

St. Jude Hospital, the second largest public hospital in Saint Lucia, provides vital health services to five major districts on the south of the island including many of our staff members and their families. With a location only 3 miles from our resorts and our long standing commitment to support the hospital after it burned down in 2009 and was forced to move operations into the Olympic Stadium, in 2015 Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa formally adopted the St. Jude Hospital Pediatric Ward with a Memorandum of Understanding. Over the years this MOU allowed us to meaningfully support their operations in the form of physical and monetary contributions, especially to the Pediatric Ward as they strive to provide the best possible care for their young patients. In addition to physical improvements such as painting the ward, Coconut Bay has provided volumes of donations including linens, telephone equipment, blankets and toys. Proceeds from Coconut Bay’s Weekly Rubber Duck Race, supported by our generous guests, has also helped us provide financial gifts to St. Jude which they have utilized towards purchasing vital equipment.

CocoLand Cares Acts of Kindness 2018

To commemorate our thirteenth anniversary on March 27, 2018, we launched the “Acts of Kindness” initiative. At the heart of this campaign were acts of goodwill targeting staff members and the surrounding community ranging from environmental awareness, mental health, to education and assistance for those in need. Activities included a Valentine’s Day visit to the Saint Jude’s Pediatric Ward giving away teddy bears and supplies, home repairs and donations for a family in need, a charity drive for the St. Lucia Children’s home, a party for the students at the Special Education Center with a visit from our resort mascots Coco and Loco, stress relief week for our staff with yoga and Zumba classes, as well as book donations to the Vieux Fort Library.

Culinary Fair

In 2018 Chef Angelo N. Konidis, our Director of Culinary Operations, organized Coconut Bay’s first Culinary Fair to help identify and nurture area students with a culinary interest and offer future opportunities for employment. During the fair, Students received instruction on everything from the cultivation of vegetables and the art of fruit carving to lessons in mixology and meal preparation. The event completed with a Grand Cook Out composed of student teams showing off their skills with awards for the winning team.

CocoLand Cares 12 Days of Giving 2022

With a goal of bringing joy to our community, Coconut Bay staff members chose the holiday season to resume our charitable efforts and donned Santa hats as part of Coconut Bay’s “12 Days of Giving” community outreach. Activities included the “Santa Train” bringing gifts to children at the SJH Pediatric Ward, primary schools, the Rainbow Children’s Home and the Special Education Center. There were also visits and distributing hampers to the needy and elderly, bringing linens to the Bordelais Correctional Facility, meal distributions to the homeless, and of course singing Christmas carols.

Local Farmers and Fishermen

Responsible sourcing of ingredients to create delicious meals can be a challenge on our small island. By creating partnerships with local farmers and fishermen Coconut Bay’s culinary team are able to incorporate the freshest Saint Lucian ingredients into our menus while supporting and encouraging local small businesses, the backbone of our food supply. The fresh fish served in our eight resort restaurants is caught daily and is responsibly sourced along with fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables from local farmers. Since 2005 our resorts have purchased from over 600 local farmers, fishermen and small vendors adding over EC$92 million (in 18 years) to the local economy.

Our Caribbean Neighbors

We stand ready to support efforts to mobilize donations from Saint Lucia’s south towards relief efforts for our Caribbean neighbors in need of assistance including donations of lumber after Hurricane Thomas in 2010, and linens and mattresses in conjunction with the Vieux Fort Constituency Council towards the Dominica Relief effort in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Community Educational Partnerships and Career Guidance Program

In an effort to create talent pools and generate interest in careers in tourism, over the years Coconut Bay has established partnerships with secondary schools and tertiary learning institutions including Monroe College, the National Skills Development Center (NSDC) and Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC.) These partnerships have allowed us to identify and train students interested in hospitality internships and provided access for local residents seeking entry-level positions. Upon completion of our three-month internship program many students are offered full or part-time positions across various departments. Trainees are able to gain direct exposure to the right skills required with hands-on training about the attitude and aptitude required to excel in our industry.

Our Career Guidance team engages the community directly on an annual basis with personal visits in area secondary schools to provide insight on career opportunities within the hospitality industry and have assisted with resume writing and job interview preparation. Thus far our team has visited with students from Piaye Secondary, Beanfield Comprehensive and Anse Ger Secondary School.

Coconut Bay also provides training and employment opportunities to individuals outside of learning institutions who have a desire to gain skills and practical experience to strengthen their employment prospects. Each year Coconut Bay hosts Job Fairs for community residents to raise awareness about available positions. Individuals are interviewed on the spot and become part of our recruitment pool when vacancies arise.

Other Community Partners and Charitable Organizations

Since 2005, donations have been provided to multiple local and international organizations in the form of day passes, complimentary night certificates, dinners, and prize giveaways. Supporting community-based charities, regional initiatives and fund raisers across the US, Canada and the UK has allowed Coconut Bay to serve multiple organizations including but not limited to the March of Dimes, PBS, Gift of Hope, Mustard Seed, Caribbean Tourism Organization, Caribbean Chinese Association, Cancer Society of Trinidad, CHTA Foundation, JetBlue, Friends of Jamaica, Hope Floats, Suffield Academy and many more.

Comfort Bay Senior Home

The Comfort Bay Senior Citizens Home is a residential care institution for the elderly located in Blackbay, Vieux-Fort and our staff chose collectively to unofficially adopt this facility to make a difference in the comfort and quality of care for the elderly. Over the years, our acts of service have included maintenance of Comfort Bay’s grounds and landscaping (2018-2020), hosting luncheons for the patrons and staff, donating linens, hampers, and TVs as well as the development of a farming component to assist in producing a supply of sustainable farm-to-table ingredients.

Hampers Basket Donations

For several years Coconut Bay staff have joined together to visit the disadvantaged in neighboring communities delivering hampers in person to area residents in dire need of food and household items. This staff-initiated effort is another way we provide support and assistance to the under resourced in our community throughout the year.

Vendors’ Market

For over 15 years, Coconut Bay has helped generate and channel direct revenue back into the local economy by supporting our local craft sellers and artisans. By allowing vendors to show off their wares and sell directly to resort guests at our twice-weekly marketplace in our spacious Splash walkways, Coconut Bay has created an easy revenue stream for these handicrafts workers. Participation in the weekly event is always free for the vendors while providing our guests with a convenient way to shop for souvenirs, jewelry, clothing, and art.

Universal Children’s Day

To commemorate United Nations’ Universal Children’s Day Coconut Bay has invited area students and teachers from Early Childhood Learning Centres to be our guests and enjoy a day at the CocoLand Kidz Klub, Waterpark, Splash Pad and interact with the rescued animals in our resort’s own Coco Corral, home to rescued animals such as donkeys, goats, ducks, rabbits and more.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IS THE COCONUT BAY WAY

SUSTAINABILITY

We prioritize sustainability to protect our island’s natural resources, benefitting our guests, community, and environment. Our operations focus on energy, waste, and water conservation, while expanding Green Initiatives responsibly to support the local economy. Our commitment to sustainable practices reflects our belief in responsible tourism and our responsibility to leave a positive impact on the planet.

CONSERVATION

To further promote turtle conservation, Coconut Bay has taken additional steps to educate both staff and international guests. We have placed signs and posters throughout the resort highlighting the three species of turtles that nest on our beach and steps guests can take to support turtle conservation. This initiative demonstrates our commitment to promoting environmental education and protecting the local ecosystem.
