Every year from March to November our guests enjoy a wonderful opportunity to participate in an important conservation effort, Coconut Bay’s Turtle Watch, learn all about these majestic creatures, and help raise awareness about the efforts to aid in their survival. Three endangered species of sea turtles call our mile-long beach home and swim ashore to build nests and lay their eggs. Our team monitors the turtle nests and attends and supervises as hatchlings emerge and make their way to the ocean.
Turtle Watch is just one of the many conservation and sustainability initiatives here at Coconut Bay. As custodians of 85 oceanfront acres, our staff implements programs every day to manage our island footprint and make your stay here in Saint Lucia environmentally friendly.
Some of our daily efforts include composting and recycling seaweed, they create a wonderful natural fertilizer. We use it to keep our gardens blooming and to grow delicious organic produce in our greenhouses, part of our sustainable farm-to-table initiative in our restaurants.
And like you, we work to conserve water, something that is especially important here on a small tropical island. Our Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting System helps us meet the daily water demands that include our five swimming pools as well as irrigating our beautiful landscape and gardens. Our rooftops are fitted with gutters and downpipes that catch rainwater and send it to two, 8,000-gallon tanks which once filtered and chlorinated keep our swimming pools filled.
Once a coconut plantation, there are over a thousand coconut palm trees here at Coconut Bay and we continue to preserve our natural landscape and to have fresh coconuts for the many delicious treats you find here from coconut water to coconut ice cream. Our coconut bounty is also used in our oceanfront spa treatments and CocoLand Kidz Klub Coconut Painting where coconut husk canvases inspire little artists. Some of our coconut palm trees are planted by our brides and grooms in our “Love Patch” to commemorate their weddings and we also plant fruit trees at the Kidz Klub including almond, orange, papaya, mango and starfruit for the resort’s young guests of the future to taste and enjoy.
Finally, our guests are the key to the success of our “Skip The Straw, Save A Turtle” initiative. We’ve been able to eliminate the use of plastic straws reducing pollution on our beach keeping the nesting turtles and hatchlings safe. We have made a full transition to biodegradable straws service items at our seven bars and we have completely eliminated single-use plastics and serving ware throughout the resort.
